Six Milestones for Crochet Beginners

🤣 Which beginner crochet merit badges have you earned?

In no particular order, the milestones for crochet beginners are:

  1. Made first stitch.  Sure, a chain stitch is considered the base for the single crochet, but it counts as a first stitch.  Once you master it, you can create bracelets, hair ties, or anything else you make from a rope.

  1. Read first pattern. Crochet had a resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic, as evidenced by increased purchases of crochet supplies in the early 2020s. Many used YouTube videos to learn how to crochet, making reading a pattern online or in books a significant accomplishment.

  1. Bought first designer hook. You only need Clover Amor crochet hooks, which slide smoothly against yarn. For starters, you may need size 4 mm. You know it, and I know it. But aren’t those designer crochet hooks so pretty–the materials, shapes, and colors?

  1. Bought first kit. You can gradually build your kit.  A friend gives you a crochet hook.  You find a random tapestry needle from crafting years gone by.  The office scissors become your go to cutting yarn.  But at some point you want a cohesive kit that shows your style.  So you buy a pre-built or customized crochet kit.

  1. Made first magic ring.  For weeks or maybe months you struggled with creating a magic ring on your own. You bought a crochet kit with all the supplies you need with an added bonus of a magic ring, but even the kit designers force you to make one on your own to complete the project. When you make that first magic ring, the angels sing.  You are bathed in a bright yellow light.  Life is good.  Sadly, it may take a few more tries until you try to replicate it.

  1. Did first yarn haul. You said you cannot afford it.  You are not proud of it.  But you did a yarn haul that opened the gates for many more. Now you have a yarn stash you would rather not speak openly about. Secretly, you would enjoy dumping all your yarn on the floor and wallowing in it. Try to resist.  That’s too much yarn to tuck neatly away afterward.
